Since we started Knolly, we’ve never veered from the lowly 68/73 threaded BSA (or English) bottom bracket (BB) in our frame designs. This style of BB is the most common standard that mountain bikes have stuck with since the growth of our sport and it’s compatible with the largest range of cranksets available in the market.
We committed to this standard because it keeps crank bearings isolated from the frame by using the threaded external BB cups produced by most major manufacturers. If there’s an imperfection (there shouldn’t be as we ensure that our frames go through a QC process) in the BB shell, a bike shop can detect and fix it with facing and chasing tools.
We recognize that most Knolly consumers are self-sufficient in servicing their bikes and have the basic tools such as a BB tool to install and remove their BBs versus press fit tools (which are expensive and more specialized). Also, we believe in the longevity and serviceability in which most threaded BBs can be removed and serviced a number of times versus single-use press fit BBs.
